People of all ages will benefit from exercise. Many persons age 65 years of age and older exercise and stay
physically fit as their health allows. These persons grow older with energy and well being far surpassing their
counterparts. Following are some of the benefits of exercising while aging.
More people reach the age of 65 that are fit then are not. These who remain physically active continue to
have more stamina then those who don’t.
Exercising does not stop the aging process however it does reduce the likelihood of untimely death due to
medical problems stemming from a sedentary lifestyle. This would include but not be limited to many
coronary issues, many blood vessel issues, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, kidney disease,
chronic lung disease, depression, bone degeneration, to mention only a few.
Aerobic exercise is the most effective way to achieve physical and psychological results. An aerobic exercise
is defined as a sustained physical activity that uses major muscle groups of the body, with regulated
intensity long-term duration of 20 minuets or more creating increased heart rate and respiration.
Three to five sessions of exercise per week is required for maximum benefits. Brisk walking, bike riding,
jump roping, jogging, weight lifting, rowing are some forms that are beneficial. While gardening, golfing,
tennis or bowling provide for some exercise, they do not qualify, as they do not permit sustained increases
heart rate and respiration.
Persons over the age of 65 obtain the same benefits of exercise, as do their younger counterparts.
Older persons are at greater risk for cardiovascular problems. The benefits provided would be an increased
number of circulating red blood cells (That provides more oxygen and nourishment to all body cells),
increased blood flow, increased enzymes necessary for changing glucose into usable energy by the body
cells, increased high density lipoproteins in the circulating blood. These protect against the hardening of the
arteries that will give you heart attacks and strokes.
Exercise in a healthy person produces an increase in an enzyme that helps prevent he deposit of Fibrin (A
clotting factor) in blood vessels to the brain and other body parts. These deposits on the lining of the blood
vessels narrow the arteries and decrease blood supply to the cells supplied by affected blood vessels.
Narrowed arteries and decreased blood flow can result in a stroke or heart attack. Additionally a lack of
sufficient blood supply to the kidneys and the legs can cause kidney failure.
Regular exercise can increase maximum breathing capacity improving and can prevent chronic lung disease.
Regular adequate exercise helps maintain normal size and contour of muscle and bones. A regular exercise
program can prevent bone degeneracy and promote healthy bone formation in both sexes. This can prevent
bone fractures that occur in both sexes of older people.
Exercise help prevent and manage stress. It helps with ones well-being and self-esteem.
Exercise can be beneficial in helping depression. In fact, it is often prescribed as a part of therapy.
Men who remain physically active maintain a higher level of testosterone then their sedentary counterparts.
People who exercise regularly and generally more healthy emotionally.
People what are fit, at any age, are more sexually active and attractive to others.
