Kinesiology is the science of human movement. It purely focuses on human activity. A kinesiology
approach applies science-based medical principals to the analysis, preservation and enhancement of
human motion in all settings and populations. Kenesiologists work either in research, the fitness industry,
clinically, and in industrial environments.
Kinesiologists assess human movement, performance, and function by applying the science of
biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, and motor learning. Kinesiologists are involved in the rehabilitation,
prevention and management of disorders to maintain, rehabilitate, or enhance movement function or
performance in the areas of sport, recreation, work, and exercise.
Kinesiologists also provide consulting services, conduct research and develop policies related to
rehabilitation, human motor performance, ergonomics, and occupational health and safety.
The practice of Kinesiology is the assessment of movement. Performance, function, and the rehabilitation,
prevention, and management of disorders to maintain, rehabilitate, and enhance movement, performance,
and function in the areas of sport, recreation, work, exercise, and general activities of daily living.
Applied Kinesiology is where the body’s movement is assessed empirically and a program or treatment is
designed for the rehabilitation of an individual, enhancement of the quality of life of an individual, or to
enhance his athletic ability.
Applied Kinesiology is the method used in many fitness clubs by qualified Fitness Counselors and
Personal Trainers. In their process of initial assessment when you join a gym they should ask general
health questions, find out about time you can commit to the gym, a BFI, BMI and weigh in, and assess your
stability and coordination (Kinesiology). Without these things in place they cannot design a proper plan for
you to achieve your desired results.
If you join or participate in a boot camp or group fitness program these assessments should also be
performed. This allows for correct tracking of your progress and allows the class instructor to make
modifications in your individual training within the group to help you grow and achieve your desired goals.
Additionally upon researching a Bootcamp or group fitness program ask what specific, if any, kinesiology
exercises are incorporated into the program to help you with stability and coordination in life’s activities.
Now we get to the part of how Applied Kinesiology can be of benefit for an average person through the
course of the day. If you are tested and assessed correctly, and the correct model of programming is put
in place, you will be able to function at a higher level of performance. In the workplace, at home, in the
gym, anyplace you could be. If you are moving stronger and unrestricted, you will be performing at a
greater level. The late afternoon slowdowns will slowly stop. (You know those days at 3 o’clock when you
just want to take a nap from being tired)
Applied Kinesiology is a necessary modality of treatment for all of us, especially if we are overweight or out
of shape.
