OBESITY

The Center for Disease Control has stated that obesity is a serious health problem. The primary causes
for it are lack of exercise and poor diet.

Obesity is the most prevalent, fatal, chronic, relapsing disorder of the 21st century. Obesity is a leading
cause of United States mortality, morbidity, disability, healthcare utilization and healthcare costs. The
increase in obesity strains our healthcare system with millions of additional cases of diabetes, heart
disease and disability to mention a few

Each year, obesity causes at least 112,000 excess deaths in the US. A study published in the New
England Journal of Medicine showed increase risk of death among both men and women who were
overweight but not obese. Obesity has been associated with numerous, adverse health effects. They
include: type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, gallstones, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea,
GERD, stress incontinence, heart failure, degenerative joint disease, birth defects, miscarriages, asthma,
cancers in men (esophageal, colorectal, liver, pancreatic, lung, prostate, kidney, non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma, multiple myeloma and leukemia), and cancers in women (breast, colorectal, gallbladder,
pancreatic, lung, uterine, cervical, ovarian, kidney, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma).

Obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 or above. To put it into perspective that we all can understand, a
person that’s 5’9” and weight 203 pounds would have a BMI of 30. This is the beginning of the obese
category.

Waist circumference is another widely used measurement to determine abdominal fat content. An excess
of abdominal fat, when out of proportion to total body fat, is considered a predictor of risk factors related
to obesity. Men with a waist measurement exceeding 40 inches are considered at risk. Women are at risk
with a waist measurement of 35 inches or greater.

It is estimated that 66% of us in America are overweight or obese. The good thing about it is that each of
us can do something about it.

A weight reduction program is in order. This isn’t anything we haven’t heard before but also haven’t taken
any actions on it before or didn’t stay with it. (How many have said Ill start a diet next week. I will start
eating different next month?)

Tomorrow is always tomorrow and it never comes. This time is to start is today. It doesn’t require dramatic
lifestyle changes to initiate a healthier you. You can begin by simply eating less when you sit down to eat.
There isn’t a law that says you have to eat everything that’s on the table. You are allowed to have
leftovers the following day.

The CDC has said that their research indicated proper diet end exercise is successful if you stick to it.
Nothing we haven’t heard before but need to pay attention to it. You don’t leave on a trip to Huston and
just stop in the road and stay there. The trip to controlling your health thru weight control is a full and long
eventful journey that will provide you with the best rewards imaginable.

Some behavioral modification is needed to be effective. Chances are what you have been doing in the
past has led up to where you are today with the extra weight so adjustment needs to be put in place.

If you really aren’t certain of what to do a personal fitness trainer knowledgeable in weight loss can help
you in getting started. If you are unable to afford the costs of a trainer for an extended period of time,
then have then have the trainer design a program for you including diet and exercise. The cost of this
should only be around $100.00 1 time.

The important thing you need to do is make a full commitment to time for your program and a commitment
to the effort needed, and most importantly a commitment to yourself.

It has been proven that even in the early stages of weight loss cholesterol has been reduced, arteries
have made significant improvement, blood pressure has reduced and type 2 diabetes has gotten better
to mention just a few immediate positive health benefits.
